Udaipur was the capital of the Kingdom of Mewar and is set on a series of lakes dating back to 1362. From the hotel the City Palace and Jagmandir are in view across the water. The grounds hold a main pool, a Mewari-style courtyard and lawns.
Rooms and suites are decorated in a natural palette with bursts of colour and traditional Rajasthani patterns. Many have private terraces facing the gardens, and select suites have temperature-controlled private pools overlooking the lake or an inner courtyard. Premier rooms look over the garden or the pool courtyard from a cushioned bay window seat, and the Premier City Palace View Rooms open from the terrace into a semi-private pool. The Kohinoor Suite has gold domed ceilings, mirror mosaics and hand-carved marble privacy screens, a king bedroom and twin bedrooms, a dining room, a living room and a large private pool with lake views.
Mewar by Vineet is the restaurant of Mentor Chef Vineet Bhatia, MBE, who reimagines the flavours of the Mewar kingdom. Suryamahal sits beneath a cloud-brushed dome, and Chandni serves dinner outdoors beside the lake with a view of the City Palace. The Bar has a lakeside al fresco terrace for sundowners. A private dinner for up to four is served under a carved dome with live traditional music, and a master chef gives a demonstration of Rajasthani cooking and spices.
Asmi is the spa, built on the Sanskrit idea of the self, and there is a gym with garden views, daily yoga, and two pools of Mughal-inspired design. One of them, the spa pool, is for adults only.
The hotel suits visitors who want the palace city of Udaipur on the doorstep, with Jagdish Temple and City Palace within a short drive, and Kumbhalgarh Fort about two and a half hours away.
